Browser Extension Migration Guide

This guide helps you migrate from the GetAddress.io Chrome extension to Ideal Postcodes browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox.

Overview​

The Ideal Postcodes browser extensions provide UK address autocomplete and validation across web-based platforms and applications, with significant advantages over GetAddress.io:

Quick Migration Steps​

Step 1: Uninstall GetAddress.io Extension​

  1. Open Chrome browser
  2. Go to chrome://extensions/
  3. Find "GetAddress.io" extension
  4. Click Remove
  5. Confirm removal

Step 2: Install Ideal Postcodes Extension​

For Chrome Users​

  1. Visit the Chrome Web Store
  2. Click Add to Chrome
  3. Confirm installation when prompted

  1. Visit the Firefox Add-Ons page
  2. Click Add to Firefox
  3. Confirm installation when prompted

Step 3: Configure Your API Key​

  1. Click the Ideal Postcodes extension icon in your browser toolbar
  2. Click Configure in the popup
  3. Navigate to the Configuration tab
  4. Enter your Ideal Postcodes API Key
  5. Click Update

Getting an API Key

Don't have an API Key? Follow our API Key guide to get one. The extension is free to download but requires an API Key for address lookups.

Step 4: Activate Platform Integrations (Optional)​

If you use specific platforms, activate pre-built integrations:

  1. From the extension options page, click the Integrations tab
  2. Find your platform from the list:
    • Zoho CRM
    • Salesforce
    • Odoo CRM
    • Microsoft Dynamics 365
    • BigCommerce
    • Hubspot
    • Quickbooks
    • Sage Business Cloud
    • Really Simple Systems (CRM)
    • ShopWired
  3. Check the Enabled checkbox
  4. Click Update

Postcode Lookup​

GetAddress.io:

  • Not available in the browser extension

Ideal Postcodes:

  • Enter a complete postcode in the first address field
  • Get a dropdown list of all addresses at that postcode
  • Select the correct address
  • All fields populate automatically

Usage Guide​

Basic Address Entry​

  1. Navigate to any web form with address fields
  2. Click on the first address line field
  3. Start typing your address
  4. Use arrow keys or mouse to select from suggestions
  5. All address fields populate automatically

Postcode Lookup​

  1. Click on the first address line field
  2. Enter a complete UK postcode (e.g., "SW1A 1AA")
  3. A dropdown appears with all addresses at that postcode
  4. Select your address
  5. All fields populate automatically

Platform-Specific Usage​

If you've enabled a pre-built integration (Zoho, Salesforce, etc.):

  1. Navigate to your platform
  2. Open any form with address fields
  3. The extension automatically activates on detected address forms
  4. Follow basic address entry steps above

Troubleshooting​

Extension Not Activating​

Check API Key:

  1. Click extension icon → Configure
  2. Verify API Key is entered correctly
  3. Ensure key is active (check your account dashboard)

Verify Integration:

  1. Go to Integrations tab in extension options
  2. Ensure your platform integration is enabled
  3. Click Update to save changes

Autocomplete Not Appearing​

For Generic Forms:

  • Ensure you're clicking on the first address line field
  • Try entering a full postcode first
  • Check browser console for any errors

For Platform Integrations:

  • Verify the integration is enabled in extension options
  • Ensure you're on the correct platform domain
  • Try refreshing the page

Address Fields Not Populating​

Check Field Detection:

Verify Address Structure:

  • Ideal Postcodes provides granular address lines (line_1, line_2, line_3)
  • Some forms may have different field structures than expected
